Cleaning Your Darts, How to Keep Your Barrels and Points in Top Condition

Dirty darts affect your game immediately. Sweat, skin oils and dust build up in the grip of your barrel. As a result, your dart feels smoother, you have to squeeze harder and your throw becomes less consistent.

Fortunately, cleaning your darts is simple and takes very little time. In this guide you will learn how to properly clean your barrels, when to refresh or replace your points and how to extend the lifespan of your set.

Why Cleaning Your Dart Barrels Is Important

Most dart barrels are made from tungsten. This material hardly rusts, but dirt easily gets trapped in the grip pattern. Especially with ring grip or other deeper grip structures, sweat builds up over time.

If you notice:

• Your grip feels smoother than when they were new
• You need to apply more pressure to maintain control
• Your darts slip more often from your hand

Then it is time to clean your barrels.

A clean barrel immediately feels sharper again and gives you more control without having to adjust your throw.

Step by Step, How to Clean Your Dart Barrels

This is the safest and most commonly used method.

Step 1: Fully Disassemble Your Darts

First remove the flights and shafts from your darts.

If you use a system with interchangeable points, you can easily unscrew the point. This makes cleaning easier.

If you play with standard fixed steel points, you can remove them using a repointer. A repointer allows you to safely remove standard points from the barrel and reinstall or replace them later. This way you can clean the barrel completely separately.

If you do not have a repointer, you can simply leave the point attached. It is not a problem to let a dart point soak in warm water for a few minutes. Just do not leave your darts in water for a long period of time. This is unnecessary and may cause rust over time.

The most important thing is to clean the barrel thoroughly and dry it completely afterwards.

Step 2: Use Warm Water and Mild Soap

Place the barrels in a bowl with warm water and a small amount of dish soap. Let them sit for a few minutes so the dirt can loosen.

Short soaking is fine, just a few minutes. Long soaking is unnecessary and can potentially cause damage.

Do not use aggressive cleaning products, as these can damage the coating.

Step 3: Clean the Grip Thoroughly

Use a soft, clean toothbrush to brush dirt out of the grip grooves. Take your time, especially with deeper grip patterns.

Do not use metal brushes or abrasive materials. These can damage the grip structure.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry Thoroughly

Rinse the barrels with clean water and dry them immediately with a soft cloth.

Also check the internal thread and make sure everything is completely dry before reassembling your darts.

Dart Points, Refresh or Replace

Dart points generally do not need to be cleaned like barrels. When a point is worn, damaged or bent, you simply replace it.

If you notice:

• The point is visibly damaged
• It no longer holds well in the board
• The point is bent

Then it is time for new points.

If a point is still straight and looks fine but feels slightly smooth, you can use a dart sharpener to lightly roughen the surface. This extends its lifespan and helps the point grip better in the board.

It is important not to over sharpen. A few gentle rotations in a sharpener are enough. If a point is truly worn out, replacement is always the better option.

If you use standard fixed points, you can remove old points and install new ones with a repointer. This makes maintenance much easier.

What You Should Never Do

Avoid these mistakes:

• Do not put your darts in the dishwasher
• Do not leave them soaking in water for hours
• Do not use aggressive degreasers
• Do not reassemble your darts while they are still wet

Proper maintenance is simple, as long as you do it carefully.

Extend the Lifespan with a Good Dart Wallet

Cleaning is only part of the story. Proper storage also matters.

With a dart wallet, you protect your darts from dust, moisture and damage during transport. Flights stay in better shape and your barrels stay cleaner for longer.

A good wallet extends the lifespan of your setup and prevents unnecessary wear. It is a small investment that keeps your equipment in top condition.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cleaning Darts

You do not need to change your setup to improve your game. Often, the difference lies in maintenance.

By cleaning your barrels regularly, refreshing or replacing your points on time and storing your darts properly, you keep your equipment reliable. And when your equipment is reliable, you can fully focus on your throw.

Proper maintenance is not an extra step. It is part of serious darts.
